Muui (A World Without Thresholds)
Muui is an organization that started as a civic activity in 2015, making accessibility maps—including one detailing wheelchair access for Seoul's palaces, driven by a mother's hope that her wheelchair-using daughter could go on picnics with friends—and has since grown into an NGO.
Born from an earnest desire to broaden her wheelchair-using daughter's world, Muui creates fundamental change that transforms one person's life.
Muui created the accessible subway transfer map with 200 citizens to highlight the reality that a wheelchair user's subway transfer time and distance are up to 18 times longer and 28 times greater, respectively, compared to non-disabled individuals.
The mother's dream evolved into the 'The Subway for Everyone' project in 2025, which is making history by being the first initiative in the 70-year history of the Seoul Subway to design and physically implement disability-inclusive signs on subway signage.
Accessibility in small neighborhood stores remains low in Korea, where only 3.7% of convenience stores have ramps installed. The 'First Floor for Everyone' campaign operates on the principle that "where a wheelchair can go easily, everyone can go easily," working to expand ramp accessibility and related environments and systems in local communities. In 2024, the campaign name became a symbol of powerful institutional reform by being the first disability access campaign cited in a Supreme Court ruling which affirmed that accessibility is a fundamental right in Korean constitutional history.
Starting in November 2025, Muui launched the student-teacher collaborative 'Momo Expedition Team' project, taking concrete action to improve the educational rights of disabled students.
Muui also hosts 'Girls on Wheels,' a talk concert featuring women with disabilities, which has run for three years, creating a space where disabled children and teenagers can ask questions of role models who also use wheelchairs, thereby lowering the psychological barriers for disabled individuals.
In rapidly aging South Korea, Muui’s work is the most vital and crucial investment for collective freedom and independence, guaranteeing mobility and access rights for all generations, and lowering not only physical barriers but also barriers of perception and the psychological barriers faced by disabled individuals themselves.
